Gardner Ma Suicides & Murders as of 1878
Suicide- There have been 9 deaths by suicide since the organization of the town.
Murders- Only 2 known murders as of 1878- On the night of March 7th 1855 a shocking murder was committed in this town. The house of Miss Miriam Kneeland and Mrs Sarah K Phinney was entered by breaking in a window. They were both killed in their beds by blows to the head by a chair post. Little work was done in town as the killer was hunted.
A 500.00 reward was offered by the selectmen.
A young man by the name of George Stacy was arrested but found innocent at trial.
Above is from an 1878 history of Gardner Massachusetts – Seems odd that in 100 years only 2 noted murders- And by part of a chair of all things. I wonder if the killer was ever found.
